A diferència d&#039;atres repartiments de l&#039;ONU que únicament poden realisar recomanacions als governs, el Consell de Seguritat pot prendre decisions (conegudes com &quot;[[Resolució del Consell de Seguritat de les Nacions Unides|resolucions]]&quot;) i obligar als membres a complir-les, d&#039;acort a lo establit per la [[Carta de les Nacions Unides]]. <br /> <br /> El Consell està conformat per 15 nacions, 5 membres permanents en dret de vet —els [[Estats Units]], el [[Regne Unit]], la [[República Francesa]], la [[Federació Russa]] i la [[República Popular China]]— i 10 membres no permanents.<br /> <br /> Els 10 membres no permanents són elegits de 5 en 5 cada any per la [[Assamblea General de l&#039;ONU]] i per un periodo de 2 anys.
