La primera referència lliterària la trobem en [[La Bledana andalusa]] (1528) de Francisco Delicat, obra en la que és mencionat com a part del repertori culinari de la protagonista. En el 1791 és mencionat en el sainet anònim Els Locos de Major Marca. Aixina mateix és mencionat en [[El capell de tres picos|&#039;&#039;El capell de tres picos&#039;&#039;]] (1874) de [[Pedro Antonio de Alarcón]]. El dàtil està emparentat en la [[shebbakiyya]] marroquina, lo que sugerix un possible orige comú, potser andalusí. Mentres que el dàtil sol preparar-se en dates nadalenques o durant la Semana Santa, la shebbakiyya es consumix en freqüència durant el més de [[ramadà]] pel seu valor energètic, ideal per a trencar el dejuni. Això novament sugerix un orige comú associat a celebracions religioses que a la seua volta podria relacionar-se en atres [[frutes de paella]] que tenen el seu orige en la [[Pasqua judeua]].<br /> <br /> == Característiques ==<br /> <br /> A la massa se li sol donar sabor en [[*ajonjolí]].
