Quan el RCA declarà que no li permetria graduar-se si no completava un eixercici de dibuix del natural en model viu en 1962, Hockney pintà ''Life Painting for a Diploma'' com a forma de protesta. S'havia negat a escriure un ensaig requerit per a l'examen final i afirmava que devia ser evaluat únicament per les seues obres artístiques. Reconeixent el seu talent i la seua creixent reputació, el RCA modificà la seua normativa i li otorgà el diploma.
