Un istme (del grec ισθμός, isthmos) és l'estrenyiment o llengua de terra que unix a través del mar dos continents o una península en un continent. En ser l'única ruta terrestre que els unix, el seu control se considera de gran valor estratègic militar i comercial. En temps moderns la majoria d'istmes estan atravessats per canals construïts per l'home en el fi d'evitar grans trayectes en les rutes marítimes, obrint pas directe entre els mars que l'istme separa.
El terme també és utilisat per referir-se a l'unió o estrenyiment que separa 2 objectes de qualsevol tipo. Per eixemple, en anatomia, l'istme de les mandíbules.
Com a istmes a destacar podem citar:
- l'Istme de Corinti unix la península del Peloponès en l'Àtica, en Grècia.
- l'Istme de Panamà unix els continents de l'Amèrica del Nort i l'Amèrica del Sur i és travessat pel canal de Panamà.
