Description
English: Building in Asmara, Eritrea on the Shida Square roundabout with the "sandal statue" a construction of two giant sandals on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of independence. "Shida" is the Arabic word for sandals. The sandal statue is 5 meters long and made of metal.
Deutsch: SHIDA Denkmal/Monument mit zwei übergroßen, 5m großen Sandalen aus Metall in Asmara mitten eines Kreises am Shida Square. Shida ist das arabische Wort für Sandale. Die SHIDA war ein Teil der EPLF Uniform und ermöglichte durch ihre einfache Herstellung und Reparatur die Mobilität der EPLF Soldaten während ihres 30 jährigen Kampfes und wurde so zum Symbol des Unabhängigkeit Eritraes. Die Skulptur war eine Idee von Eritos Abraham, der 1991 aus seinem 20jährigen Exil aus den USA nach Eritrea zurückkehrte. Das Monument wurde zum 10.ten Jahrestag der Unabhängigkeit Eritreas errichtet. Durch die Klimaverhältnisse ist es zwischenzeitig sehr renovierungsbedürftig. Hintergrund neues Raza Building/Hochhaus, u.a. mit Sitz der Schwedischen Botschaft im 4.Stock.
