English: Knowledge of German in the European Union (plus Croatia, Switzerland, and Turkey) according to: "Special Eurobarometer 243" of the European Commission with the title "Europeans and their Languages". Made by user:Aaker.
  • Data for Switzerland (not in the EU, 64% native German speakers) added separately. Data for Switzerland as of 2006 according to linguadult.ch[1][dead link]: German is spoken as a foreign language by 39% in French speaking Switzerland (Romandie), and by 49% in Italian speaking Switzerland (Ticino). 20% of people in the German speaking area speak German as a foreign language. Over all of Switzerland, about 88% speak German (64% natively and 24% as a second language).
  • In South Tyrol 27% of people are not native speakers, those are Italians who migrated to South Tyrol in the past (a lot of them because of incentives of the Italian government) as it belonged to Austria before 1919.
