English: Principle of a public key infrastructure.

CA: certification authority, RA: registration authority, VA: validation authority

Rough outline: A user applies for a certificate with his public key at a registration authority (RA). The latter confirms the user's identity to the certification authority (CA) which in turn issues the certificate. The user can then digitally sign a contract using his new certificate. His identity is then checked by the contracting party with a validation authority (VA) which again receives information about issued certificates by the certification authority.

CA : Autorité de certification, RA : Autorité d'enregistrement, VA : Autorité de Validation.

Grossièrement : Un utilisateur demande un certificat avec sa clé publique à une autorité d'enregistrement (RA). Cette dernière confirme l'identité de l'utilisateur à l'autorité de certification (CA) qui, à son tour, émet le certificat. L'utilisateur peut alors signer numériquement un contrat en utilisant son nouveau certificat. Son identité est ensuite vérifiée par la partie contractante auprès d'une autorité de validation (VA) qui reçoit à nouveau des informations sur les certificats émis par l'autorité de certification.
