Chitose (1898)

El Chitose (千歳, ''Chitose''^?) va ser un travessia protegida de segona classe de l'Armada Imperial Japonesa. Era el buc bessó del Kasagi.

Antecedents

El Chitose va ser encarregat com a part del presupost d'emergència de reposició de la flota de 1896, i finançat en l'indemnisació de guerra rebuda del Imperi Chinenc com a part de l'acort del Tractat de Shimonoseki, que va posar fi a la primera guerra sino-japonesa.

Dissenye

El Chitose va ser dissenyat i construït en les drassanes de l'Union Iron Works en Sant Francisco. El navío era el segon gran buc de guerra capital encarregat per la Marina Imperial Japonesa a un constructor nortamericà, i va anar l'últim en ser construït en una drassana estrangera. Les especificacions de la travessia eren molt semblades a les del Takasago, en un desplaçament i dimensions llaugerament majors, en idèntic armament en qüestió de canons pero sense lanzatorpedos de proa. Interiorment, no obstant, eren molt distints. El Chitose tenia 130 compartimento estancs, mentres que el Takasago tenia 109.
