Grypania spiralis és un fòssil del Proterozoico en una antiguetat de fins a 1870 millons d'anys (les anteriors datacions de 2100 millons d'anys han segut rebaixades).[1] Va poder ser una colónia jaganta de cianobacterias, pero donat el seu tamany (més d'un centímetro), es creu que va poder ser una alga filamentosa, és dir, un organisme eucariota. No obstant, esta assignació és problemàtica, puix donada la resolució de les impressions es distinguix dels filaments de les cianobacterias del gènero Lyngbya únicament en el seu tamany.[2] També per la seua morfologia ha segut interpretat com a bactèries jagantes relacionades en les Thiomargarita que són les bactèries més grans del món i macroscòpiques.[3][4]

Els fòssils varen ser trobats en les formacions Negaunee Iron en Palmer, Míchigan (1870 Ma),[5] Rohtas en Índia (1600 Ma),[6] Gaoyuzhuang del nort de China (1500–1400 Ma)[7] i Doushantuo del norest de Guizhou (Ediacárico mig, 593–551 Ma).[8] Açò implica que el ranc temporal d'este organisme s'estén a lo llarc d'uns sorprenents 1200 millons d'anys.[8]
