Idioma zuñi

El idioma zuñi (autoglotónimo shiwi'ma) és la llengua nativa del poble zuñi (āshiwi), un grup ètnic originari de l'occident de Nou Mèxic i l'orient d'Arizona (Estats Units). És parlat per al voltant de 9.500 persones, que es concentren especialment en els voltants de Zuni Poble (Nou Mèxic) i alguns llocs menors en l'estat veí d'Arizona. En contrast en atres idiomes indígenes dels Estats Units, un important número dels chiquets de la comunitat zuñi posseïxen competència en la llengua nativa, lo que llibera a esta llengua d'una situació de greu perill. Edmund Ladd reportava que el zuñi era la principal llengua de comunicació i d'us domèstic en Zuni Poble (Newman 1996).

Classificació

El zuñi és considerat una llengua aïllada, és dir, que carix de parentesc clar en atres llengües. Alguns especialistes han intentat relacionar-la en alguna família llingüística, pero, en general, estes propostes no gogen d'àmplia acceptació en el món acadèmic. Les principals hipòtesis proponen vínculs en la família penutí, les llengües tanoanas i la controvertida família hokana.

L'hipòtesis millor argumentada és la de Newman (1964), que ubica al zuñi com una llengua penutia. No obstant, el mateix Newman senyalava que es requeria major evidència per a sostindre la seua hipòtesis, entre atres coses pels problemes metodològics que condicionen l'investigació en les llengües penutíes (Goddard 1996). També Morris Swadesh incloïa el zuñi en la seua classificació penutioide , de la mateixa manera que Joseph Greenberg, encara que les seues propostes contenien arguments que després varen ser jujats de poc convincents (Campbell 1997). Per un atre costat, Edward Sapir incloïa esta llengua com a part de la macrofamilia azteca-tanoana en la seua classificació de 1929, sense evidència que recolzara esta hipòtesis. Les discussions posteriors sobre la suposta macrofamilia asteca-tanoana han exclós de modo sistemàtic el cas de l'idioma zuñi.

Karl-Heinz Gursky va publicar una hipòtesis que pretenia mostrar una relació entre els idiomes zuñi i keres, la qual ha segut abandonada. Per la seua banda, J. P. Harrington va escriure un artícul inèdit en el títul "Zuñi Discovered to be Hokan" (Campbell 1997).

El proyecte comparatiu ASJP no mostra similituts òbvies de vocabulari entre el zuñi i cap atra llengua, encara que sembla apuntar a una possible relació lluntana en el chimariko, o inclús el salinero; no obstant, dita similitut podria deure's a raons accidentals i no és prova en ferma de parentesc.

Contactes en atres llengües

Ya que el zuñi forma part del àrea de convergència llingüística dels indis poble presenta vàries traces característiques que són compartits pel idioma hopi, les llengües keresanas, les llengües tanoanas i, en menor mida, en l'idioma navajo —esta última llengua, de filiació na-dené, constituiria la perifèria de dita àrea de convergència llingüística—. Les semblances entre estes llengües de distintes filiació es deu segurament als contactes històrics entre les seues respectives comunitats llingüístiques. El desenroll de les consonants eyectives en la llengua zuñi podria deure's a les relacions entre els zuñi i els pobles de parla keresana i tanoana, que posseïxen séries completes de fonema eyectius. Per una atra part, algunes llengües tanoanas posseïxen esquemes vocàlics del tipo i-i-a-o-o, l'orige de la qual sembla trobar-se en l'idioma zuñi. Atres traces característiques de l'àrea llingüística dels indis poble són la presència d'un vocabulari ritual, i la presència de la consonante velar labializada /k^w/ (Campbell 1997).
